New Polar Centre expected to be completed for 2012

Phase One: The Town called tenders on the ground work and as a result, the land (immediately behind St. Anthony Olympia) was blasted and prepared for the placement of the building..  As well, road construction was completed to the site and is now paved, with sidewalks..

Phase Two: The second tender was awarded to Brooks Construction..  The first portion of the work, which included concrete work, was completed by Budgell’s Construction from St. Anthony..

The Polar Centre floor was poured on Wednesday, May 30th, 2012.. A new sign is in place. The project continues to move forward with hopes that the Polar Centre will be completed in August 2012..

Phase Four: If all goes as planned, the Town expects to call tenders for the final phase which will include road work and asphalt to complete the project.. Time lines for this piece of work are yet to be finalized..

The facility houses an arena with the capacity to seat 492 people, a conference centre and an indoor walking track, and provides the necessary amenities to enable the town to host significant conferences, trade shows and other events..

The Town of St. Anthony plays a vital role as the major service centre to the surrounding communities on the Northern Peninsula.. St. Anthony provides shopping, professional services, post-secondary educational institutions, entertainment, health and medical services to the region.. The new Polar Centre provides a significant asset for the business community of the region..

Recreation is an important part of people's lives and facilities like the Polar Centre will help to recruit and retain young professionals in rural areas.. This facility ties in with government's wellness initiative and is an asset for the Town of St. Anthony..
